The recent collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis serves to
remind us just how fleeting and insecure our life is upon this
earth.
The things that we take for granted, including our next breath,
are really not to be relied upon. "What is your life?"
James asks, "It is even a vapour, that appreareth for a little
time and them vanisheth away." (James 4:13-14KJV)
It's amazing how much of our time, resources and energy we
put into "this life" when in reality it is but a vapour.
. . so short, so fleeting and of such little substance.
Jesus told as about the foolish man who built his house on the
sand, and the winds came, and the storm and took it all away.
The other man, the wise, built his house upon the rock, which
Jesus described as "hearing and doing His word." This
man's house stood while the foolish man's house fell.
What is your house built upon today? Is it built upon a bridge
of sand, something which appears sure and secure, but in reality
may crumble at any moment? If your life ended at this moment,
do you know where you would spend eternity? Do you have a security
deep in your heart, a knowing that Jesus has saved you from your
sins?
This is a knowledge that can only come from God. A ceremony, a
membership, a certificate, a handshake from a preacher cannot
provide such security. The scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit
bears witness with us that we are children of God. Do you have
that assurance today?
The story is told of John Wesley traveling by ship to America
as a young missionary, out to save the "heathen." He
was zealous and religious, but when the storms began to blow across
the Atlantic, he was trembled in terror. His fear of death shook
him to his innermost being.
But a group of Christian believers, known as the Moravians, were
on the same ship, bound for America as well. In contrast, however,
they were at peace during the storm, and showed no sense of fear,
singing hymms and praising God. Death held no power over their
minds and hearts. Their house was built on the rock.
John Wesley was raised in a Christian home. His father was a preacher.
But he realized though his experience on the high seas that he
was not saved. It was sometime later, at a prayer meeting back
in England, that his heart was "strangely warmed" and
he was born again.
God has made a bridge to eternal life that will never fail. Get
both feet on His bridge by yielding your life completely to Him
and clinging to the cross of Calvary. Build your house on the
rock and it will stand.
